Support Art in Worpswede

Become part of a great idea.

The Worpswede Museums keep the world’s most famous artists’ colony alive and preserve the unique cultural heritage of the artists from all generations of Worpswede. We continue this history and highlight the relevance of the ideas from Worpswede for today’s life: Withdrawal and departure, the ideal of a primitive and nature-connected life on one hand, and the utopia of a better, fairer world on the other, reflect many of the challenges we face today.

If you want to be part of a community and personally support one of the four Worpswede museums, the friendscircles and support associations of the museums warmly welcome you. With your contribution, artworks are acquired, projects, events, and publications are enabled, and children, young people, and adults are introduced to art. And you will also benefit: Meet like-minded individuals and art enthusiasts at exclusive events held by the friends’ circles, who, like you, actively nurture their love for the artists’ village of Worpswede, its art, and its connection to one of the museums.

If you want to support the work of the museums and the preservation of the unique Worpswede museum landscape on a larger scale, then the four museum foundations are your point of contact. They look forward to engaging in dialogue with you about how your personal commitment can help preserve these magnificent museum ensembles for the future and fill them with cultural life. Contact us! We look forward to hearing from you!

Barkenhoff

Heinrich-Vogeler Society

Preservation and Care of Heinrich Vogeler's Legacy

Since 1975, the Heinrich-Vogeler Society has been dedicated to promoting and preserving the entire works of Heinrich Vogeler, as well as the Barkenhoff. The society played a significant role in founding the Barkenhoff Foundation Worpswede in 1981 and has since supported the artist's residence in its function as a support association in various ways.

Barkenhoff

Barkenhoff Foundation Worpswede

Preserving the Barkenhoff

The Barkenhoff Foundation Worpswede was founded in 1981 as an independent foundation under civil law. The founders include the state of Lower Saxony, the state of Bremen, the district of Osterholz, the municipality of Worpswede, the Vogeler heirs, Hans-Herman Rief, the Barkenhoff support association, and the friends of Worpswede. The foundation was preceded by a non-partisan, cross-border initiative to save the Barkenhoff from decay and demolition.

The purpose of the foundation is the preservation and care of Heinrich Vogeler's artistic legacy as well as the collections of the Worpswede Archive. This work is documented in the permanent exhibition and the rotating presentations in the Heinrich Vogeler Museum, which, along with the archive, is managed under scientific direction.

Promoting Art Together

The Worpswede Society for Art, Culture, and Science is a non-profit association that supports the activities of the Große Kunstschau Worpswede. This includes: assisting with the acquisition of valuable exhibits, supporting projects and publications, organizing events for both adults and children, as well as lectures, readings, and other events.

A key focus is introducing young people to art and culture and involving them. The initiative JiM: Jung im Museum (Young in the Museum) is therefore a central part of the association's work. It is carried out in close collaboration with schools, artists, and supporters.

Haus im Schluh

Institutional Operator:
Heinrich-Vogeler Stiftung Haus im Schluh Worpswede

In 1920, Martha Vogeler created the "Haus im Schluh" in Worpswede with the intention of uniting the family's art collection in one place to make it accessible to the public and to permanently preserve the memory of the work of her husband, the artist Heinrich Vogeler. The descendants of Martha Vogeler and Heinrich Vogeler continue Martha Vogeler's legacy through the establishment of a foundation that serves these purposes.

The purpose of the foundation is primarily to preserve the cultural heritage and intellectual legacy of Heinrich and Martha Vogeler. This includes, in particular, the museum management and presentation of the collection items, the maintenance and care of the houses and properties entrusted to the foundation, the promotion of cultural events that align with the foundation’s purpose, support for the scholarly documentation of the collection, and the expansion of the collection through acquisitions and donations.

Worpsweder Kunststiftung Friedrich Netzel e.V.

Art Sales for a Good Cause

The non-profit and volunteer-led association is dedicated to promoting art and culture in Worpswede, with a particular focus on supporting the Worpsweder Kunststiftung Friedrich Netzel. Its activities include continuing the art trade, which has been closely associated with the historic house on Bergstraße 17, especially under the youngest Friedrich Netzel. The association also provides updates about the Worpsweder Kunsthalle and highlights special offerings from the museum shop.

The art trade aims to contribute to the sustainable operation of the museum and the foundation. Proceeds from sales are directly reinvested into the private foundation.

Worpsweder Kunsthalle

Institutional Operator:
Worpsweder Kunststiftung Friedrich Netzel e.V.

The Worpsweder Kunststiftung Friedrich Netzel operates the Worpswede Kunsthalle. After the death of gallery owner Friedrich Netzel in 1994, the foundation was established a few years later to ensure the preservation of the collection for the public. In 2009, with the establishment of the museum alliance, the direction of the house changed: the gallery became a professionally managed museum with a small, dedicated team of staff.

Sponsors and Supporters

The work of the Worpswede Museums would not be possible without the continuous support from numerous sponsors and partners. Since the fundamental renewal of the Worpswede museum landscape between 2007 and 2015, the following sponsors have supported the Worpswede Museum Alliance—largely for many years and up until today—and have made the major joint exhibitions of the four museums possible since 2012. We are deeply grateful for their support!
