Heinrich Vogeler: His Art, His Love, His Life

The Haus im Schluh presents the work of Heinrich Vogeler within the context of his artistic and personal journey. Spanning from the romantic painting “Spring” (1897) to the programmatic composite painting “Winter Command of the Worker Students” (1923/24), the exhibition traces his artistic evolution from a dreamy bourgeois to a humanist and socialist. From 1920 onwards, Vogeler dedicated his art entirely to the idea of a new society.

The exhibition tour takes visitors through the historic rooms of Martha Vogeler's family. These spaces are furnished with paintings, furniture, designs, and personal mementos from the Barkenhoff that Heinrich Vogeler gifted to his daughters and Martha in 1920 for the furnishing of their new home in the Schluh. This offers a unique opportunity to enjoy masterpieces in a living-room atmosphere.

The Place

The Home of the Vogeler Family

In the atmospheric Haus im Schluh, the Vogeler family preserves the artistic legacy of Martha and Heinrich Vogeler. For over 100 years, this cultural gem has captivated visitors to the artist village of Worpswede. Just a few minutes from the village center, visitors are immersed in a special world.

In 1920, Martha Vogeler fulfilled her lifelong dream by building the Haus im Schluh. In 1919, she purchased an old Lower Saxony farmhouse in a neighboring village, which was slated for demolition. This house was rebuilt in Worpswede as a modern residence for Martha and her three daughters. Starting in 1920, Martha made Heinrich Vogeler's works publicly accessible and established the Worpswede Archive in 1946, using his private estate. In the 1930s, the ensemble was expanded with a second half-timbered house, enhancing the presentation and creative work possibilities.

Thanks to Martha Vogeler's open and welcoming personality, many artists and writers were drawn to the house over the years. It fostered an atmosphere of free thought, creative work, and exchange. Some stayed for only a short time, while others remained for years, or even their entire lives.

Today, the Haus im Schluh features an extensive exhibition of Heinrich Vogeler's art, a historic handweaving workshop, a museum shop, and cozy holiday apartments.

Furniture by Heinrich Vogeler

Heinrich Vogeler, in addition to his artistic works, also designed Jugendstil furniture. His grandson, Hans Georg Müller, revived this production in the 1970s. Since then, the furniture workshop in Worpswede has been crafting chairs, tables, benches, cabinets, chests, and more based on original designs. Some of the original pieces, like the famous "Rosenschrank" (Rose Cabinet), as well as items featuring hand-carved motifs such as tulips, medallions, owls, or horse heads, can now be viewed at the Museum Haus im Schluh.

The furniture is produced by furniture carpentry Worpswede, led by Kristen Müller.

The History of the Haus im Schluh

A House as the Lifelong Dream of Martha Vogeler

In 1920, Martha Vogeler founded the Haus im Schluh in Worpswede, which she developed into a cultural center and later into a museum. The house became an important site for art and memory, where she collected and displayed works by her husband, Heinrich Vogeler. To this day, it continues to function as a museum. Martha's commitment to the arts and her creation of a memorial space for Heinrich Vogeler and the Worpswede artists' colony make her a key figure in the history of Worpswede.
