Haus im Schluh
Color Harmony in Wood - 100 Years Hans Georg Müller
Nov 17, 2024 – Mar 9, 2025
His life was art, and wood was the material for his artworks.
Timeless furniture design and large-scale wood inlays showcase Hans Georg Müller's special appreciation for this vibrant material. In 1958, he was awarded the Bavarian Gold Medal for his leather-covered seating furniture and the Lower Saxony State Prize for his inlay art. As an interior architect catering to a discerning clientele and a winner of numerous public art competitions, he continuously expanded his workshop and team, becoming a sought-after mentor in the woodworking trade.
Hans Georg Müller was born on May 14, 1924, in Worpswede at Haus im Schluh, the son of Bettina, the second daughter of Martha and Heinrich Vogeler, and the painter and architect Walter Müller. He completed his training at the "Vereinigte Werkstätten für Kunst im Handwerk AG" in Bremen as the top-ranked art carpenter of his class at the age of 18. His professional path was interrupted by World War II. In 1947, he studied architecture for several semesters at the State Art School in Bremen. In 1950, he earned his master craftsman’s diploma in cabinetmaking and founded his own furniture and art carpentry workshop on the family estate at Haus im Schluh, which he handed over to his grandnephew Kristen Müller in 2016.
Hans Georg Müller felt committed to the mission of his grandmother, Martha Vogeler, to "take care of the Schluh." Through his extensive knowledge and personal connections, he continuously contributed to the cultural development of this significant institution. He was a founding member and held leadership positions in the Freundeskreis Haus im Schluh e. V. and the Heinrich Vogeler Stiftung Haus im Schluh Worpswede. He also played a key role in preserving the Barkenhoff and establishing the Barkenhoff Foundation, thus continuing Martha Vogeler’s legacy.
Among the works he considered most important were his 1950 masterpiece, a living room cabinet featuring intricate technical refinements; the leather chair for which he received the Gold Medal in 1958; and the inlay work Giorgio de Chirico wartet auf Franz Radziwill (Giorgio de Chirico Awaits Franz Radziwill) from 1989. This inlay was the first in a series of artistically free-designed wood inlays that he created later in life for his own pleasure.
He remained creatively active until the age of 90. Hans Georg Müller passed away on July 30, 2018 — at the very place where he was born and had spent his life, at Haus im Schluh.
