Lisel Oppel

"I am deeply touched by the landscape here in Worpswede. It demands an inner engagement, inspiring me to find beauty in simplicity."

Lisel Oppel

Lisel Oppel (1897–1960) was a German painter known for her impressionistic depictions of life and landscapes in and around Worpswede. She arrived in Worpswede in 1934 and was inspired by the unique atmosphere of the artists' village.

Her works often depict the everyday life of the rural population, conveying a special closeness to the North German landscape, brought to life through her bright, cheerful color palettes and loose brushstrokes. Her preferred subjects included simple country houses, garden idylls, and the daily life of women and children in Worpswede, which she captured with great warmth and empathy.

As an independent woman and artist, Lisel Oppel developed her own artistic language. Despite the obstacles women often had to overcome in the art world at the time, she succeeded in establishing herself as a painter and developing a distinctive artistic voice, whose works are still appreciated today.
