Zeitspuren. Alexander Dettmar - Paintings

November 17, 2024 to March 9, 2025

Worpsweder
Kunsthalle

The beauty and power of Worpswede have been artistically processed by the Barlach Prize winner Alexander Dettmar since his early youth. He is fascinated by houses that, like individual corporeal beings, have stories to tell. Often, his work revolves around typical northern German architecture. He says of himself, "Brick runs in my blood." After many successes in the world’s metropolises, the painter is continually drawn back to his homeland around Worpswede and the Teufelsmoor.

The Worpswede Art Hall presents selected works that – painterly powerful – span the arc between Worpswede and Paris; an arc that was already defining for the first generation of Worpswede artists, notably Paula Modersohn-Becker, her husband Otto Modersohn, Bernhard Hoetger, and the poet Rainer Maria Rilke.

Your visit to the Worpswede museums

Reduced in form and color, serene, Alexander Dettmar's art touches the senses. His paintings under the title "Time Traces" are like responses in the search for calm and simplicity in the world. At the same time, they also convey traces that point to the beauty of transience, to a time that does not stand still.

From November to March, the Worpswede Art Hall presents selected works that – painterly powerful – span the arc between Worpswede, Lübeck, Passau, Rome, and Paris.

The Permanent Collection

Tradition Meets Modernity

The Worpswede Art Hall permanently displays works by the first generation of Worpswede painters who made the small moor village a hub for artists around the turn of the century. In addition to works by Fritz Mackensen, the founder of the artists' colony, Otto Modersohn, Hans am Ende, Fritz Overbeck, and Heinrich Vogeler, the art hall also presents works by female artists such as Paula Modersohn-Becker, who is considered a pioneer of modernism. She broke with the role models of the first generation and pursued her own vision of simplicity and greatness in art.
